At the risk of looking like a complete idiot, I'm adding this additional post so that others, who may be facing the same issue, can see the EASY solution to this problem. Since Windows 8.1 has launched, a lot that has changed. I was finally able to figure out what the problem was this afternoon. Interestingly enough, in looking at Device Manager on this computer, the same exclamation mark appears on the Apple iPod USB mass storage device - even though it functions properly. My iPod still works correctly with my old computer (running Windows Vista). However, the "Device Sync" test failed saying "no iPod touch, iPhone, or iPad found". The "Device Connectivity" tests" all passed with green lights. I also tried running the Diagnostics on iTunes. However, the Apple iPod USB mass storage device has an exclamation mark and a "Code 21" status - Windows is uninstalling

In looking at Device Manager while the iPod is connected to the desktop, the Apple Mobile Device USB Driver shows up as working normally. No data is actually transferred to the iPod. When I connect my iPod Nano to my new computer, it appears in iTunes as a device and says it's syncing but it's not. I've read the various articles on the Apple website concerned with devices not being recognized, etc. Trying other USB ports) and, obviously, none have worked.

I have tried the various solutions proposed (uninstalling iTunes along with other Apple software and reinstalling iTunes, It seems many others have had this issue as I have found numerous similar threads on the Apple Community website as well as this one.
